The Enemy is at the Gate

I gave Dorothy’s address to the cab driver then said to her. “You grab a few things, enough to get by for a few days—”

“What do you mean a few days, where are we going?”

“The Pentagon. After that scare, I’m not letting you stay on your own.”

“But, Harry,” she tried her sweet voice on me, but uh ah… you can’t talk sweet talk old Harry Markle, no sir. Well, actually Dorothy could but not when it came to her safety.

“No buts about it lady, we can’t risk anything happening to any of us, you know that.” I didn’t want to say much more, I could tell by the way the cabbie twigged his head he heard most of what was said.

And wanted to know more.

“Wait here please, driver,” I said when we got to her apartment. “The lady is just going to grab some items before heading to another location.”

“And what will that be, sir?” He asked.

“The Pentagon.”

His eyes went from inquisitive slits to the size of dinner plates. “You-you work with the Pentagon?”

“And so does the lady so anything you overheard is strictly confidential, understand?” I laid on the bull tonight, I can tell you.

“Yes, sir… I mean, I never heard a word either of you said, no sir, not a single word.”

Catching up to Dorothy in her apartment I let her know it wasn’t just her safety which concerned me. “I think all of us, not just you, should move into the Pentagon until we can be sure there are no hosts in the city.”

“And how will you do that? Call Thee’bat while we’re staying at the Pentagon? I can see it now, ‘Oh, excuse me general I just have to make a call to my friendly Martian, won’t be a moment.’ Is that how it will be?”

She mocked but I understood.

“For the moment we need to get you squared away at the Pentagon, I’ll call Thee’bat tonight then Grady and I will follow, all right?”

We came back down after she packed a small suitcase only to find our taxi had vanished. “I gather you put the fear of God—or should I say— the Pentagon, into the driver.”

“Yeah, we’ll just have to get another and we won’t say anything while we’re on our way.”

We waited a good fifteen minutes before a taxi came by. In the back seat we said little and a few minutes later, arrived at the Pentagon.

“Chances are Stringfield is still in, go and explain to him what happened and that you need one of the rooms here for a few days,” I said to her, “oh, and tell him that Grady and I will join you in a hour or so, all right?”

“Sure Harry but what if he wants to investigate what happened at the bar?”

“Tell him to hold off on that till I get back.” I kissed Dorothy and jumped back in the taxi. Next stop, my apartment and a conversation with Thee’bat.

The parasite had shown its ugly features here in Washington.
